I was extremely fortunate to be in London at the heart of the Folk boom of the mid-1960’s and to witness first-hand the emergence of some of the finest and most influential musicians we have ever seen.
Bert Jansch, Danny Thompson and the beautiful Pentangle, John Martyn, Roy Harper, Al Stewart, Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, the ground-breaking Fairport Convention and later Nick Drake were among those taking English traditional music to an entirely new place.
‘Whistle Test’ enthusiastically offered television exposure to these wonderful artists.
Lesley Duncan appeared with Tom Paxton on the very first show in 1971. Plainsong, Gerry Rafferty, Bridget St John and visiting American musicians such as Tim Buckley, Harry Chapin and Judee Sill all played live sets and now, forty years later, we see the legacy and influence of their music in the contemporary Folk revival.
These are magical tracks from a gentler time than now.
Enjoy.
