America became my second home in the 1970’s and many of these songs provided the soundtrack to our ‘Whistle Test’ filming trips there, particularly in the Southern States.
There was nothing better than Soul in the sunshine...hundreds of radio stations pumping out some of the greatest Soul records ever. Cruising never sounded so good, whether it was driving the Florida coastline or with the radio blasting in the back of one of those big old gas-guzzling limo’s on the island of funky Nassau.
This collection is packed with memories of those moments...the heartfelt ’Show and Tell’ by Al Wilson (No.1 when I touched down for my first USA experience in 1974), Ann Peebles beautiful and underrated ‘You Keep Me Hanging On’, Ben E King’s masterful ‘Supernatural Thing’, Aretha’s cover of ‘Don’t Play That Song’ and the original version of ‘Strawberry Letter 23’ by Shuggie Otis.
This is Soul music from a golden age...big hits and forgotten gems.
Enjoy.
