Jeff Griffin: He actually came along to interview me ostensibly to do a 'knocking
piece' on Radio 1 but we found that we got on quite well and we had music
in common. Having got on so well with him interviewing me we went round
to the local pub afterwards and it turned out that Bob actually was an aspiring
DJ and I think really he had this in mind all the time even to the extent
that he had a running order with him. |
So
we talked about this and he wondered what the chances were of actually
getting a programme together and I said 'well, I like the sound of his
voice as well, it's a bit unusual, and he was knowledgable so we set up
a pilot programme a few weeks later and he did that very well. I then
put that forward to the audition panel for DJs and he passed that. But
of course the trouble was having told him that he passed it he then wouldn't
stop phoning me to find out when he could get a proper job |
Tony
Blackburn on Bob's first broadcast: Well, it was all going very well as I remember and we had a guy called Jimmy Kingsbury who was the head of radio presentation, I think, and you said 'it's 6:30 and here's Kimmy Jingsbury. He didn't take it too well for some unexplainable reason and you got an official memo. Bob: Yes, I got an official warning. He complained officially about me. You know, half an hour in and you're thinking everything is going so well. Then you get casual and that was the result. Immediately learned a lesson. Tony Blackburn: Well done Bob, you've done a lot for the music business, you deserve all of this. |
Nicky
Campbell and John Inverdale
"Bob was on after me so I was sort of Bob's warm up man. We used to have these changeovers between my programme and his, and Bob's such a knowledgable and warm broadcaster sometimes we'd chat for minutes....and I think it was just us listening!" Bob: "Yes" |
"But not so, because I
was at a Radio 1 road show a few years later and this chap in an anorak,
which was a Radio 1 anorak ten years out of date so all the warning signs
were there, and he said I have in my hands a cassette, and he thrust it
into my hands, he said 'This is my top 50 Nicky Campbell/Bob Harris handovers'". |
Jonn
Inverdale remembered one of Bob's cricket matches. |
