To quote Bob, "My fave album is the one that just fell on the mat" So I thought I'd start this thread seeing as we have a "Can't Stop Playin This Song" thread.

I just bought Doug Burr's album 'On Promenade' which was released late last year. I remember Ian Stevenson of this parish first recommended him a couple of years ago so when I saw this crop up in a few end of year lists I put it on my shopping list. This is a superb album with not a dud track on it. I listened for the first time last night on my mp3 player at work and it was one wow after the other. A nugget that must of fell out of Bob's pan. Another artist from the hotbed of good music, Denton, Texas no less. A cracking buy!

There's so much good music about at the moment it's hard to keep up.

Locked Down was favourite album from last year and is still a big favourite.
Good to see your offspring coming along nicely Ian. My youngest who has a 1st in Dance reckons it's one of the grooviest albums. Good on her.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Dr John - Locked Down
As I was playing Locked Down my youngest son came in and asked if I was playing some Black Keys. Fair play to the lad, he's coming along nicely

It's folk, but not as we know it...

The eponymous album by Vamm...as heard on the Mike Harding podcast. Far beyond my powers of description but a beautiful album by any measure. There's a far more literate review at http://vamm.co.uk/reviews/

This cd is now sitting on the shelf alongside the Charlie Gillett compilation, Sound Of The City, - Memphis. This is also well worth a listen.

Various Artists - It Came From Memphis (2cd)MANTDCD235.
Bob played a track from this cd in the last hour of last Sundays show. A very various cross section of R&B, Rock & Roll, Blues , Rock and Soul. Featuring such people as Alex Chilton, The John Spencer Blues Explosion, North Mississippi Allstars, Big Star, Syl Johnson, Ann Peebles, Tav Falco's Panther Burns, Al Green, Lucinda Williams, Jim Dickinson along with a load of other 'old guys' plus some cracking tracks from people I've never heard of. At £3.19 off Amazon I couldn't resist it. What a steal

I was wondering about taking a punt on the Cala Recordings, The Atlantic Recordings and Nearer To You. I know they will be quite different to the covers albums. I have Interpretations and I've Got My Own Hell To Raise along with her latest. I'd forgotten about Scene Of The Crime though. Thanks Mindcandy.

The previous three Anti label collections 2007 up to 2011 were all of a consistently high standard.

Especially notable was '07's "The Scene Of The Crime". Not least for the unlikely partnership with the Drive By Truckers.

The opening track, the Eddie Hinton penned 'I Still Want To Be Your Baby' is typical of what is to follow - grittily exuberant and passionate.

The covers album "Interpretations" is very solid too. Sample "It don't come easy". Hardly recognisable from the Ringo sung Beatles recording - but amazingly atmospheric.

Ethan Johns - If Not Now Then When.
Picked up on a track from this on the excellent free cd with Uncut Magazine (The New Music, April 2013) and as JRN also recommended it I thought that it would be worth investigating. Very nice indeed. This Uncut cd looks like tempting me into purchases of the Phosphorescent, John Fullbright, Edwyn Collins and Billy Bragg cd's. I didn't have to be tempted to buy the Low and Hiss Golden Messenger ones though

Hi The lew,

Just catching up with one of your previous recommendations and one of my favorite Blues/R & B artists --- Bettye LaVette -- and her Thankful & Thoughtful.

Stunnung versions of Dylan's "Everything Is Broken", ditto Neil Young's "Everyone Knows This Is Nowhere".

Highly recommended

Never thought that I'd go for the John Grant album but some of these songs have been getting right into me over the last few weeks. Would love to listen to these songs played backed with just the guitar or piano, without the synth/keyboards which dominate the cd. Still good though.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Push The Sky Away
John Grant - Pale Green Ghosts
Boz Scaggs - Memphis

Received a copy of the newly-released Incredible String Band's Live At The Filmore CD, such nostalgia, I saw them on tour at thye Oxford Town Hall around this time (1968). Just ordered Boz Scagg's Memphis CD too, looks like a cracker.
