Rachid Taha - Barra Barra. I first heard this on the Saturday Programme - 3rd of March 2007. Didn't know it was used on the film Blackhawk Down until this week. Can't stop playing this track at the moment.

Didn't realise the price of vinyl today as it is a long time since I bought it new. My purchases today are from second-hand/charity shops and I am now willing to be a bit more tolerant of flaws than I was in the 70's. I may be a tad nostalgic for earlier times but then again nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

New to the forum but hope I can put in my tuppence worth. Following on from the Nick Cave thread, I would urge you to check out "Murder Ballads" and the tour de force "O'Malleys Bar" the nearest thing to acting you will get on audio.

From the Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds cd No More Shall We Part.
The tracks -
Hallelujah
Fifteen Feet Of Pure White Snow.
This is my first Nick Cave but not my last (2 on the way )

"I'd given my nurse the weekend off
My meals were ill prepared
My typewriter had turned mute as a tomb
And my piano crouched in the corner of my room
With it's teeth bared"

Can't stop playing this one

Jake Bugg - Simple as This. Have not really heard much new music that has tickled my fancy so to speak but I do like this young man. A lovely track.

Seasons Greetings to all

The more I play the Solomon Burke cd Nashville, the better it gets.
The Lew Posted - 05/11/2012 : 14:14:06
The opening track We're Alright Now, from the John Hiatt cd MYSTIC PINBALL. Another great album from Mr Hiatt matching last years Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns.

Ah yes jrn, I love it when Neil Young rambles on a bit . Cortez The Killer must be my favourite Neil Young song of all time. Have still not bought Americana because of the God Save The Queen track as it really grates on me, but for just the one bad track why am I moaning.
jrn Posted - 12/10/2012 : 09:23:09
They now have the 16 min Ramada Inn playing complete with video.
jrn Posted - 12/10/2012 : 09:14:47
There were a couple of the shorter tracks on the Planet Rock website. They sounded great and raw. Some of the other tracks will be 12-16 mins long.
The Lew Posted - 10/10/2012 : 06:22:45
Have you had a listen to Psychedelic Pill then jrn? If so, where?
jrn Posted - 09/10/2012 : 21:53:06
Couldn't agree more Ian. Another oldie release I'm really looking forward to is Neil Young - Psychedelic Pill. Double cd with some pretty long workouts on both discs.

From the Tom Waits album Bad As Me, the 2nd track RAISED RIGHT MAN. After his previous release Real Gone which was really heavy going, this album is much easier on my ear. Tom goes MOR? Not quite. We are getting some great releases from the old guys at the moment who are really coming up with the goods. Tom Waits, Patti Smith, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Mark Knopfler, Bill Fay, Garland Jeffreys, Tom Jones (check out Tom's version of Bad As Me on his album Spirit In The Room). What's goin' on?

Another song that's really getting to me. From The Coal Porters album Find The One, their cover of Bowie's HEROES. Saw them doing this live last week and the power and emotion that came out of it live was quite electric. Nice vocals from Neil Robert Herd in a great little band fronted by Sid Griffin of Long Ryders fame. Go and see them if you can.

The June Tabor & The Oyster Band album Ragged Kingdom has to be the best folky album I've listened to for a long time. Even the sleeve and artwork are spot on. A job to pick out a best track as they are all good. Think I'll go for the June Tabor box set ALWAYS and get it directly from her web site as it seems to be quite difficult to obtain elsewhere.
leskneeling Posted - 24/09/2012 : 13:44:41
His voice reminds me of Michael Chapman back in the day

Bill Fay - Cosmic Concerto (Life Is People) from the album Life Is People.
jrn Posted - 22/09/2012 : 02:08:39
David Kitt - What I Ask an oldieish track but I think one of my all time favourites. Just love the way it builds and builds.
The Lew Posted - 19/09/2012 : 19:52:14
Bought this on vinyl last week John and I think I'll have to buy the cd also. It's quite excellent. Why didn't anyone try and get him back into the studio years ago. Well done to the label Dead Oceans for putting the cash up and to Joshua Henry who approached him with the offer to make the record. Dead Oceans also agreed to Fay's stipulation that his royalties go to the charity Medecins Sans Frontieres.

Heard Bill Fay's version of Wilco's Jesus etc. on Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service, it's absolutely beautiful Here's the song:

The whole album is streamed as well and comes highly recommended. Appreciate any comments folks might have.

The track BE MY HUSBAND, from the Nina Simone album Pastel Blues.

June Tabor & The Oyster Band - Love Will Tear Us Apart, from the album Ragged Kingdom.

"Mutt Romney's Blues" - from the Election Special album RY COODER.

A barbed attack on the republican candidate whose caused a storm earlier this year when it was revealed that when Mitt took a family trip he lashed the pet dog to the roof.

Clever lyric that makes relatively light of an appalling case of animal cruelty.

Ry Cooder's 5th album in a row that are all highly recommendable.

Chavez Ravine 9/10
My Name is Buddy 8/10
I Flathead 9/10
Pull Up Some Dust and Sit Down 8/10
Election Special 9/10

Darrell Scott's "Hopkinsville" is a pure country gem, one of my favourite songs of the year.

Ry Cooder - Mutt Romney Blues

Definitely an acquired taste and I absolutely couldn't stand Ferry's effete voice when they first came on the scene. Virginia Plain - what was that all about? However, they mellowed and so did I. The only album I own is Avalon but I have come to regard it as an all-time classic.
ken Posted - 20/08/2012 : 10:19:22
I was toying with the idea of going to see Roxy Music on the last tour, but wasn't prepared to pay the ludicrous prices at the O2 for rubbish seats at the back. They seem to be in the Van Morrison camp for ticket prices.

I have the recent vintage live album on CD, and had Manifesto and Flesh and Blood on vinyl at the time they came out. Out of the Blue is a cracking song in my opinion but they seem to be a bit of an acquired taste.

Cheers

Ken
