I was asked to supply a Train songs playlist to an American blog that ended up being not quite what I thought it was. Which, dang it, was a problem 'cause I was rather pleased with how it played. Not Bob standard of course, but here they are:

Detective - Train That Never Ends
Nick Cave – O Children
Elbow - Station Approach
Robyn Hitchcock – I Often Dream of Trains
Half Man Half Biscuit – Time Flies By (When You’re A Driver Of A Train)
Ray Wylie Hubbard – Train Yard
Seasick Steve & The Level Devils – Hobo Blues
Amanda Shires – When You Need A Train It Never Comes
Hugh Masekela – Stimela
Jimmy Smith – G’won Train
Robert Earl Keen – Whenever Kindness Fails

So I posted them on #tincanland (listen & read along if you like: http://mcaf.ee/xnd1c )

And then I thought, we could have some fun here with this. There's only been a few hundred - thousands? - of train songs done.

How about sharing your faves?

Would like to hear that Chet Atkins cover.

Someone else contributing to that blog had already picked Desperados, damn them. Do you prefer Clark's David Alan Coe's or Jerry Jeff Walker's version (or another)?

Nice list. I had some of them shortlisted. One notable difference is I had Richie Havens doing Peace Train. Matter of choice.

ooo, thanks much for the Utube link. Such playing! Vocals didn't do much for me, though.

Gave a re-listen to Highwaymen too and I get the appeal but I have a bugaboo about that era when they turned country songs into production numbers. Like those early Townes albums.

I don't mean this as a pun (although it's a pretty good one), but she's a bit of a sleeper, isn't she?

Ha! You have a lot of nerve making a claim like that in this company. I'd only heard 3 of those, but that's beside the point. :)

I read somewhere once (I think)that this was the first song Kathleen Brennan had a hand in - after she told him to stop with the mumbling drunk personna.

I always thought Boxcars was a Joe Ely original. Sad to say I don't know who John Hancock is.

Nice one with the Who. I almost included that on my list - "outta my head/outta my head..." what a classic earworm

I always liked UFO's cover of Mystery Train.

Why did I ever throw out all those cassettes of Radio 1 In Concert shows? :-)

Cheers

Tincanman - if you don't know who (George) Butch Hancock is then you've missed out on one of the greatest songwriters alive.

I'd love to give you a list of recommended listening but everything Butch does is required listening so take your pick from all the great music he's written/sang and enjoy!
