Almost anything from Jackson Browne's Running On Empty actually, but most notably the title track.

Totally agree about Roll Me Away but there are a lot of Seger songs which should be listened to on the road, even if they aren't actually about the road, Hollywood Nights, Night Moves, etc.

I could probably make at least a hundred suggestions for this topic (millenia ago I used to make up tapes to listen to on the road which were all just labelled "Road Music 1", "Road Music 2", etc) but to save boring everyone to death here's just a couple of off the wall suggestions.

Fifteen Days Under The Hood - Jack Tempchin
Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy) - Jim Croce
Super Blue - David Munyon
(alternatively, same artist, Still Got A GTO)
Three Across - Chris Wall
Grandma's White LeBaron - Chip Taylor
1952 Vincent Black Lightning - Richard Thompson

Racing in the Street - Bruce Springsteen
Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
Stand on It - Bruce Springsteen
Drive All Night - Bruce Springsteen

6 Days on the Road - Dave Dudley & Various incl. Steve Earle
Truck Drivin' Man - Various
Eastbound and Down - Jerry Reed
Blazing Smokestack - Various incl. The Willis Brothers

Talking of trucking songs, I've got a line from one going round in my head, but I can't remember the song.

It's a country song and the line is something like

"I told the judge there was two trees you see, and I went between 'em. He said, the state I was in that's the way I woulda seen 'em"

Anyone?

Found it: Dave Dudley again. Two Six Packs Away.

Ha ha, yes Pauly, I kinda felt it was being a bit too obvious to mention any Springsteenism, but of course, Racing in the Streets is the definitive road song and one of my all time favourites anyway. Despite seeing Bruce live numerous times, I've still only seen that done once, at Crystal Palace; it was the high point of the show. I even have a sticker somewhere that says: 'My other car is a '69 Chevy with a 396'

Again, given my known proclivities (ooh er missus!) I also felt listing Thunder Road to be too obvious, so I'm glad you did instead.

Would this be a good time to bring up Born to Run? Cadillac Ranch?

Nice one Paul. And just while we're on the subject of the Lincoln-Mercury Division of FoMoCo (and also harking back to Jackson Browne more than a touch), how about David Lindley's Mercury Blues?

Once again jrn, several tracks which are for the road rather than about the road, but you'll get no criticism here! Some of these are high on my own road trip song list, notably Tunica Motel, although I think a lot of TJW qualifies - Steamy Windows for instance, or Polk Salad Annie. Huhh!

I would probably go for Gimme Shelter in The Stones canon, although Route 66 would qualify on both counts. You have also listed a number of things I don't recognise and am now inspired to seek out, thanks.
