Letter to Emily White at NPR All Songs Considered

"Of the 75,000 albums released in 2010 only 2,000 sold more than 5,000 copies. Only 1,000 sold more than 10,000 copies. Without going into details, 10,000 albums is about the point where independent artists begin to go into the black on professional album production, marketing and promotion"

I've just been reading this after Gretchen Peters tweeted back to somebody who'd mentioned it. I think it also mentioned a 25% reduction in the number of profesional musicians since 2000.

For those of us who have built and owned a collection over many years it's sobering stuff. I have colleagues who think I'm barmy for having bought over 1000 CDs, whereas I consider that to be not a all a large collection (I've seen "that" photo of Bob's study). There seems to be no real concept of owning music among some of my younger colleagues here, including those who say they love music.

Cheers

Ken

Yes...there can be real pleasure (on both sides of the transaction, I hope) in buying a CD at the end of a gig, directly from the performer(s)whose artistic efforts (and, maybe, life-time practice) have provided a memorably enjoyable evening of entertainment.
In recent days, I've been delighted to buy CDs, after superb performances, from Furnace Mountain and Hatful of Rain - and now, every time I play them, I feel almost like they are distant friends. If my ten pound CDs help just a tiny bit to keep such talented performers on the musical road, I shall be pleased to regard the money as extremely well spent.

Agree, RWS, but wish a few more artists did sell them for just £10. Many times I've gone to the merch stand only to see them priced at £15. Now this is a bit of a deterrent as I'm sure they'd sell far more if a tenner each.

I think everyone on this forum should read that article and then forward it to everyone they know who calls themselves a music lover.
I'm as guilty as anybody in that I copy CDs for friends and am happy to be given copies, some from illegal downloads, but I still buy CDs (they're more affordable now than they ever were), and I still take issue with anybody who says illegal downloads aren't theft.
My daughter and her boyfriend are both professional musicians (one classical and one jazz) and I think they both face a fairly uncertain future. Just as well they love what they do!
I think Les should put a link to the article at the top of the Welcome page.

First post on the forum (woo, go me) though I've been listening to Bob's shows for years. In fact it's Bob that has cost me huge amounts of money as I buy a lot of music based upon his shows. Like Ken, most of my friends don't understand the large CD collection or expensive hifi, but I prefer to actually listen to music, in high quality, rather than have poor quality background music while doing something else.

I'll buy direct from artists at gigs if I can (bought 5 at Cornbury festival this weekend) or through their site, or even Pledge, which I love. Have I pirated music? Technically yes: one album which I later bought, and a few albums I already own on vinyl since my record deck is broken. But I only feel slightly guilty about those as it's unlikely I'd ever buy them on CD anyway. But out of 1200+ albums, that's about 6 that I've copied.

I think one of the real problems is that the generation of "free music" people, are those who don't understand that art should be paid for, they don't see it as a valued job. There's still the image that musicians make loads of money, which is clearly untrue for the vast majority. Sad.
