To quote Bob, "My fave album is the one that just fell on the mat" So I thought I'd start this thread seeing as we have a "Can't Stop Playin This Song" thread.
I just bought Doug Burr's album 'On Promenade' which was released late last year. I remember Ian Stevenson of this parish first recommended him a couple of years ago so when I saw this crop up in a few end of year lists I put it on my shopping list. This is a superb album with not a dud track on it. I listened for the first time last night on my mp3 player at work and it was one wow after the other. A nugget that must of fell out of Bob's pan. Another artist from the hotbed of good music, Denton, Texas no less. A cracking buy!

There's so much good music about at the moment it's hard to keep up.

Phil, I like the idea and I agree with your views on Dougs CD........it is superb. Not to be outdone, I have just come across this young guy called Anthony Da Costa (unfortunately the album didn't drop on the mat.......because I downloaded it last night......does that count??...............yes, and I did pay for it) Anthony is a 17-year-old, performing songwriter from Pleasantville, New York. Although he sounds like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders with a song called ?Ain?t Much of a Soldier? but on the other hand he does a beautiful song called Dolly & Porter about the relationship of Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner If you like the likes of Jeffrey Foucault, Chuck Brodsky and a bit of Ryan Adams thrown in for good measure.....go for this.....I think you will like it
http://www.myspace.com/anthonydacosta
If you would like to buy a signed copy of his latest CD you can go to Neil's site at :-

Anthony's disc is brilliant, the more I listen to it, the more I'm getting out of it; considering he wrote much of it when he was 16 it's staggering.

Unfortunately I caught the Country show half way through when Kimmie Rhodes was on so missed Anthony La Costa but will be sure to play it again, Sam... But just listened to Doug Burr and like what I heard... feels a bit like when I stumbled across Jeff Black... "Gold Heart Locket" a particular favourite of mine... Very tempted to follow your lead Harry and download this one. Kirkie |

True Freedom, the second album from California Country Rockers Rancho Deluxe. Lots of catchy guitar riffs and plenty of great steel playing from one of the greats, Jay Dee Maness, check out the track Maintenance Man. Also features Greg Harris and Skip Edwards.

And i could'nt agree more Phil, lots of excellent new music around at the moment. |

| Best album I have heard this year is The Gougers "A Long Day For The Weathervane". Great vocals matched to interesting arrangements, married to fine songwriting. What more could you want from a band from Texas? |

Last week the new Crooked Still album arrived ('Still Crooked') - managed to grab a listen over the weekend...
I don't think it's available until June, but look out for it when it's released as it's a real cracker.
Although Rushad (the mad cellist) has left, he's been replaced by a cellist and a fiddle player who sound great together.

The latest gem from Richard Julian has been on permanent rotation in our household his spiky jazz-inflected guitar playing is full on as usual but the addition of Michael Froom as producer add alot of percussive flourishes. Sunday Morning in Saturdays Shoes is the title but the standout tracks are the surreal Man in the hole and the homage to the all pervading American culture - Syndicated. Bob has never played anything by Richard to my knowledge so its about time the guy had a break - bring him on Bob. |

| Well, the new one from Sun Kil Moon,'April' was handed over by the postie yesterday, it's numbered and signed by Mark Kozelek in a very nice digipak package. Absolutely gorgeous it is, dare I say a masterpiece. There's also a bonus disc with some wonderful alt. versions on it......fully recommended! |

I don't have a mat. Well I do, but the mail goes into a box outside.
Ruth Notman's "Threads" was the last to be delivered via the postie. Enjoying listening to her after catching her bit on the show a few weeks ago.
At the same time I got Argent "All Together Now" as Bob plays "Hold Your Head Up" quite often (or so it seems). Had to send it back though as track 5 has a defect in the audio.

As mentioned elsewhere I ordered both albums by The Neil Cowley Trio after catching one song on "Later...".
Both "Loud, Louder, Stop" and "Displaced" are very good - jazz as I prefer to hear it. As I already have some E.S.T (Esbjorn Svensson Trio) CDs this fits into the area of jazz that I enjoy listening to.

Chatham County Line - 1V Terrific progressive bluegrass with shades of the more acoustic Jayhawks at times. Can't wait to catch these guys in Kilkenny in a few weeks time. |

I'm still failing to tire of the Doug Burr CD which has just got better with every listen. I tracked down a review over at the neighbours at americana-uk which gave it 10 out of 10 and commented that the album contained "eleven songs of shimmering majesty". I know, it's easy to cherry-pick reviews to suit one's own taste but I have yet to read a less than glowing one. The reliable PASTE magazine has also latched onto him. I also mentioned this purchase over at centro-matic.com on their message board seeing as Doug is based in Denton. I got a reply from Mark Hedman saying "I really like Doug's album,On Promenade. We used to work together, and he's as pleasant and genuine a person as you could ever hope to meet".
Which leads me to my latest purchase. I just could not wait for the postman this time and did not want to wait for the gig. So I drove down town this afternoon and have just got back with the South San Gabriel/Centro-matic double album (for the price of a single I hasten to add) Dual Hawks. Should be a good'n if all is to be believed. Good to hear Bob saying that "Kept On The Sky"is one of his "tracks of the year"...I'm off to listen!
Disclaimer: I have no connection with Doug Burr. I just think he's a talented singer songwriter who needs a bit more exposure (sorry to be a Burr bore). It's a shame Bob has not played him but at the end of the day it's Bob's show, not mine. |

Valerie,
I just want to prolong the boredom for the non-believers and prolong my Doug Burr obsession for one more post.
I've been browsing around some blogs about this album, all good, but I found two really interesting ones.
On this there are some live tracks to download.
HERE
And this one has a superb review with a more detailed description of the songs including my current favourite "?How Can the Lark (My Dear Theo)?.

| This is a new one that's worth checking out ... Two Fingers Of Firewater, a young UK country band with pedal steel, mandolin, keyboards and accordion augmenting the guitar/bass/drums lineup. Their first album is beginning to get played on internet radio sites and BBC 6 but they've yet to be widely discovered. Check out the final track on the album The World Can Turn, a great, great song. |

This dropped on my mat a few weeks ago as I was fortunate enough to get an advanced copy of the new one from Collin Herring called "Past Life Crashing".
Bob's never played Collin's stuff before. So is this Bob friendly? It sure is as 5 of the tracks are produced by Colin Cripps and all 5 feature Kathleen Edwards on backing vocals (particularlly the excellent "Punches"). Recommended!

Phil, when you say " Bob Friendly" how about this one.............Heather Waters - "Propeller":-
http://www.heatherwaters.com/index.cfm?CFID=92748022&CFTOKEN=90114380
CD Baby described her as " What the love child of Rilo Kiley and Emmylou Harris would sound like"....I don't know about that but Delbert McClinton must have saw something in her as he hired her as a backing singer in his band and she sung alongside Emmylou Harris on McClinton?s Grammy-nominated album, "Room to Breathe."
So I think she fits all the conditions of being "Bob Friendly"......do you not think?
IMHO I think it does and it is a great CD, as well.
PS. Phil, I agree with you Collin Herring's new CD is very very good and I also would recommend it |

Last to drop on mat was........
Landermason ( folk / jazzy type duo )
An excellent album called ' The Reason '.
Have also been listening to Dawn Landes and Brandi Carlile's new albums. The latter ( The Story ) was suprisingly good.Loving Dawns excellent ' Fireproof ' album. On first listen I thought some tracks were a bit patchy before I actually got into it. .She does a great version of ' I won't back down '.
Very much enjoying the ' Waking the Witch album called ' The boys from the abattoir '.
Also been catching up with some Joe Bonamassa. |

| Might be a little late on the scene with this, but Bob's 'House Band', The Storys' latest offering, The Town Beyond The Trees, has been on heavy rotation on the way to/from race meetings just lately. Two Saturdays ago, driving to New Aldershot in the sun with the title track blasting out was just about....perfect. |

| Stock Car G, unfortunately I have to disagree with you about The Storys' new CD..........to me it was big disappointment. After hearing them live in Session on Bob's show I just had to get their new CD......right away. As soon as it came out, I bought it............a big let down. It seems to missing something....I don't know what, but it wasn't as good as the Live Session. I know that others who I have lent the CD too have said the same thing and have even gone further and said it is very safe, almost M.O.R. music......a comment to far IMHO which I don't agree with. Maybe the next time they make a CD they should do it in Bobs Studio because that was the best Session I have heard on Bobs show. |

Harry: What I will say, is that the new CD is not, overall, as good as the first. But then that was outstanding - there's only one track I don't really care for on there, and there's not many CD's I can say that about these days. I suppose with Town Beyond The Trees, it's a case of 'That Difficult Second Album' - but I still like it a lot better than many other things I've heard lately. Plus, the opening and title tracks really are top notch IMHO.
As for your suggestion about them using Bob's studio next time, I couldn't agree more. I daresay Bob would be quite amenable to that... |

Stock Car G............I totally agree, it is the "Difficult Second Album' Their first CD was very good and I was expecting more of the same and after hearing the Session, I thought they had 'nailed it'..but unfortunately they hadn't. I also agree with you that the first couple of tracks are very good but then (in my opinion) it just....drifts and never gets back to the highs of those tracks....real pity. There is no doubt they are one of the better bands around, at the moment. Maybe the problem lies with having too many songwriters in one band. Did you hear their Session on Bobs show? wasn't it one the best?.........well I thought it was. Maybe next time.....they'll nail it |

The new Eliza Gilkyson disc arrived earlier this week - much as I love her material I've always thought it was a little too similar over the last 8 years or so.
The new disc (Beautiful World) is a real return to form, and probably the best of all her albums, it has a much more acoustic, relaxed feel and her voice is better than ever...one to look out for in the coming weeks. |
