| Rolling Stone reports: "Bob Dylan has revealed more information about his upcoming album Tempest, including cover art and the track listing. It's his 35th studio album. The album contains 10 songs, including a John Lennon tribute entitled "Roll on John," which quotes lines from multiple Beatles songs, including "Come together right now" from "Come Together" and "I heard the news today, oh boy" from "A Day in the Life."" |

That's a nice thought, the tribute to John Lennon. I think Bob Dylan has the edge has a lyric writer, although the Beatles could certainly pen a tune. Is it treason saying that, I'm not sure

Isobel,
Worry not. Your comments don't even merit a £10 fine suspended for 25 years.

That's a relief, the accommodation in Tower of London probably isn't very comfortable.

Apparently Rudolph Hess (the last person imprisoned there I believe, after his ill-judged attempt at ending the war) found little to complain about. He was kept in one of the little houses on the site though, rather than in the more traditional accomodations! I think it probably beat the next few decades in Spandau, whatever... |

I'm happy for Mr Hess of course, that his stay was not too uncomfortable but I don't really like the idea of the Tower myself . So it's a relief that preferring Bob Dylan's songwriting to the Beatles doesn't result in incarceration for treason.
The Tower looks a bit creepy to me

I realise this is straying well OT here, but I crave your indulgence for this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWFq-v7TKdQ
...which will either make The Tower seem more or less creepy, but is almost guaranteed to make you laugh. I don't keep many YouTube links for re-watching but cannot bear to delete this one! |

That certainly is a long way from Bob Dylan. What a robust sense of humour that Beefeater has! One of the towns that was privileged to receive a part of William Wallace is not many miles from where I live. An area of the town is named after him. I believe they got one of his arms. It is really disgusting to think about.
It is quite creepy at the Tower, I haven't been there for years got dragged round by mother when I was quite little and refused to go in some places because it just had a really nasty dark, sinister feel. The most interesting thing was the theory about the ravens leaving, I thought at the time.

I also remember my mother liked a record by someone she heard because of her parents, Stanley Holloway. It was as if he was a beefeater at the Tower, and one line he was supposed to be talking to a tourist and said 'It's got a new handle and perhaps a new head, but it's still the genuine axe, sir'.
Expect the beefeater in the video would have got on well with him!

Thanks, I just got the delete box showing 'NOTE: Only the A' showing on screen as the box won't open full screen so I can't see the rest of message. As far as I remember there to delete, it's necessary to enter login details but that section of box isn't showing. Just tried again and it still happened.
Will take it to the problems thread

I just called in to look at NBC News online, mainly to see what they're saying about Olympics as they are covering in US. And found that they have a news report on Beefeaters and history of the Tower(probably because Olympic medals are kept there).

Very topical - not with the subject of the thread but with the way it veered off.
I love the reporter's commentary; 'Henry V111 had two of his wives executed here - it was a favourite spot of his.'

Excluding the 'Christmas Album,' it looks like 5 outanding original albums on the bounce.

| In my opinion Tempest is better than Time Out Of Mind and Modern Times or maybe I should say more enjoyable rather than better. Don't know if it's better than Together Through Life as I've only just ordered this one last Friday (Amazon £1.40). |

I'm very fond of TTL Ian.
The songs co-written with Robert Hunter very much hit the spot and well reflect what was happening 3/4 years ago.

Can't believe I didn't buy this album earlier mindcandy. This album and the release of Tempest has rekindled my enthusiasm for Bob Dylan. Have been playing Biograph and The Bootleg Series 1-3 over the last few days. Outstanding. Have bought this Bootleg Series up to Vol 8 so the next step will be to get The Witmark Demos. One thing that's amazed me over the years though is why did he never want to print the lyrics on the lp's or cd's? Can't think of any album of his that has the words on them , not even the original vinyl albums. Why? Should have asked Sid Griffin last week why? |

I have most of Bob Dylan's original albums on vinyl. All in perfect condition. I bought them all off a crazy neighbour (when I was in my early 20's) who thought he was going down for a stretch and he wanted to get rid of his collection pronto. The trouble was he didn't go down and wanted his albums back. Now this folks is a much longer and maybe a more interesting fable |

Bootleg 1-3 and Biograph are both spectacular.
For both albums I needed a month with each (every day) to fully appreciate the quality of the writing and the musicianship whilst contextualizing the songs with the albums that we're recorded at the time ( many of which missed the final selection).
Naturally they repay repeated listenings revealing new layers of meaning and substance every time. Especially the magnificent "Angelina"
As regards the non appearance of lyrics on albums I long ago resorted to purchasing the "Lyrics: 1962-2001" published by Hodder & Stoughton" in the early noughties. This ends at and includes "Time Out Of Mind". This clealy enhances matters as to possible misheard lyrics and, as poetic statements, makes it easier to interpret the narrative.
It is hard to imagine any worthwhile chronicler/collector of Folk/Americana not having a copy of these essential recordings. |
